Guest Farm Ghaub in Grootfontein

(10 twin rooms) PO Box 786, Grootfontein; tel/fax: 067 240188; email:ghaub@iway.na. Central reservations tel: 061 233145; fax: 061 234512; email: nshmarket@olfitra.com.na; web: www.namibsunhotels.com.na

An unlikely part of the large Namib Sun Hotels group, this farm is situated in the Otavi mountains, in the heart of the triangle, some 60km from Otavi. It's on the south side of the D3022, about 3km west of its junction with the D2863.

Ghaub was originally founded as a mission station in 1895, and has been restored and renovated relatively recently into a really very spacious and stylish guest farm – which has successfully retained a lot of character. Everything here has high ceilings and plenty of space, especially the rooms, which are clean and well cared for. In each you'll find twin beds and an en-suite bathroom, and outside each is a large veranda with impressive views of the surrounding land and hills. Tours of the nearby caves are probably easiest to organise from here; other activities include farm drives and walking trails.

Ghaub's character seemed fairly formal when I last visited; it wasn't a place to turn up without a prior reservation and expect the warmest of welcomes. However, book ahead and it's a charming, well-mannered guest farm that seems to have some of the air of a country house hotel. Recommended for a few nights if you want somewhere to relax, and perhaps do a little gentle walking – provided that you don't mind a lack of must-see attractions in the vicinity.

Rates: single N$410; double N$600 including breakfast.
