Kasaka River Lodge

(8 chalets) Nyamangwe Safaris Ltd, PO Box 320197, Lusaka 10101; tel: 01 265836; tel/fax: 01 260012; email: nyamsaf@coppernet.zm; www.kasakariverlodge.com
First impressions are important in this stylish lodge, whose name derives from kasaka-saka, the flamethorn acacia. Opened in 2001, it is well situated 5km to the west of the national park and is owned by an English/Zambian partnership.

The cool entrance lodge leads through to well-tended lawns, where tented chalets on stone-clad platforms face a pool with umbrellas and chaises longues. Walkways lead over an ornamental pool past the dining area and beyond to a further four chalets 'on the wild side', which include a secluded honeymoon suite complete with Ottoman-style bed and its own open-air bath. If the other rooms are a bit on the small side, they're also well equipped. A hexagonal living area with comfortable leather chairs is cut into the steep hillside with the river far below; it's all very luxurious.

All the usual activities are on offer, although canoeing is only by prior arrangement, but the whole feel of the place is more about relaxing and 'being on safari' than getting out into the bush.
