Toktokkie Trails

(tents) PO Box 162, Maltahöhe; tel/fax: 06638 5230 or 061 235454
Owners Marc and Elinor Dürr have closed the former Die Duine Guest House to concentrate on Toktokkie Trails. The place is 11km west of the D827, its turning is signposted 400m or so north of the C27-D827 junction. Contact details are likely to change over the next few months.

If you stay here, then allow two nights. This is the ideal length of time for a desert walking trail. Walking is leisurely, concentrating on the flora and fauna, and their adaptations to the desert; it's not a route march, as Marc goes at the pace of the slowest. You need only carry your camera, binoculars and water.

A recommended option is to spend your second night sleeping out in the desert, under the stars. Any luggage that you need will be driven out to the overnight stop for you, and then collected in the morning. It's magical.

The desert landscape around here is a spectacular mix of wide plains, mountains, the odd tall sand-dune and many smaller vegetated ones. It's great country for walking, dotted with marvellously knurled old camelthorn trees.
