Seeing the canyon as a day-trip from a base some way off is practical, particularly as the diagonal rays of early morning or late evening light do little for photographers' hopes of capturing the depths of the canyon. Keetmanshoop is one possibility, or for a less urban setting you could opt for somewhere around Karasburg or Grünau to the east, or Seeheim to the north. However, if only to minimise your driving, stay closer if you can – at Hobas Campsite, Ai-Ais or one of the private lodges nearby, offering a good range of choice.
