Bitterwasser Lodge and Flying Centre

(30 bungalows, 13 rondavels) P Bag 13003, Windhoek; tel: 063 265300; fax: 063 265355; email: bitterwa@mweb.com.na; web: www.bitterwasser.com

South of Uhlenhorst, on the C15, about 59km from the B1, this specialist lodge caters to glider pilots up to world-class level. Note that this is not a school for gliding – it is a place for those who know how. Pilots often stay for weeks, and have broken so many records that there's an avenue of palm trees lining the way to the airfield, where each palm was planted to commemorate a record. Every year, the avenue grows.

Bitterwasser has three gliders, a single-seater Nimbus 2, an ASW 20 15m, and a DG 500M, all of which are available for hire, but most pilots prefer to ship out their own craft by container for the season, which runs from October to February (though the lodge is open all year round). Gliding aside, there are opportunities for swimming, hot-air ballooning and game drives.

The lodge's bungalows are comfortable, with en-suite facilities and 24-hour electricity. Some have air conditioning and even CD-radios. Rondavels are more basic, with simple furniture and a central ablution block. There are also rooms in the adjacent Dune House. If you're a serious glider, then email them for precise details of their facilities and prices, or check out their website.

Rates: Bungalows single N$785, double N$1,060, bed and breakfast. Rondavels N$415, for two people, including breakfast. Dinner N$75 per person.
