Hostels & Camping

Windhoek has a thriving number of backpackers' hostels. Until recently, these were mostly confined to the north and west suburbs, but the opening of the new Chameleon City Lodge is likely to create quite a stir. While the Cardboard Box is still the favourite choice of younger travellers, Chameleon, Puccini and Backpacker, recently joined by Roof of Africa, are all increasingly successful. Being newer and, generally, better equipped, they often demonstrate a willingness to help visitors (with free lifts from the city, and the like) and tend to have one eye on a more mature market. The city's only dedicated campsite, Arebbusch, is just south of town, so only of benefit to those with vehicles. Campers without transport can pitch a tent at some of the backpackers' hostels.
