Hilltop House

(6 rooms) 12 Lessing St, PO Box 4327, Windhoek; tel/fax: 061 249116; email: hilltop@iafrica.com.na
This spacious, airy B&B overlooking Windhoek's rolling northern suburbs was opened just a couple of years ago, but already has a reputation as one of the best of its kind in the city. From the airport, turn right off the B6 into Nelson Mandela Av, then left into Robert Mugabe Av and immediately left again into Promenaden Weg. Head up the hill, and bear second right into Lessing St; number 12 is on the left. From here, the centre of Windhoek is just a 15-minute stroll, or a couple of minutes by car.

Each of the wooden-floored bedrooms looks out over the secluded garden and beyond to the surrounding hills. Tasteful cream décor, offset by dark-wood furniture, is enlivened by numerous personal touches: traditional woodcarvings, hand-filled jars of handcream and shampoo, plants and wrought iron give a hint of Africa juxtaposed with real comfort. All rooms have a luxurious en-suite stone-tiled shower with two washbasins and hairdryer, and other mod cons include TV with Dstv, AC, coffee/tea-making facilities, and fridge with (affordable) minibar.

Breakfast at Hilltop is a meal to be savoured, served in your room or by the small pool in the early morning sun. Diehard aficionados of bacon and egg will not be disappointed, but for the very best try the 'healthy eating' option – it's unbeatable. Innovative light meals are also available on request if you're too tired to venture out.
