Some way out of Windhoek, Marie's is easily spotted by the animal and bird murals on the outside wall. You'll need your own vehicle to find the place: head south on Robert Mugabe Av, then turn right after the railway into Krupp Street, and right again into Bable. Diaz is a circular street that crosses this – turn right and Marie's is on the right. There's secure parking.

The pension was taken over by Vicky Greyling in 2001, and she has plans to upgrade the facilities which at present are fairly basic – though it does have an inviting pool. Once you've negotiated the noisy doberman and Irish wolfhound you'll discover two self-catering family rooms with shared facilities, 4 doubles and a single, all with en-suite bathrooms. Vicky also organises tours and safaris through her own company, Africa Direct.
