Palmquell

(10 rooms) 60 Jan Jonker Rd, PO Box 6143, Windhoek; tel: 061 234374, cell: 081 1271036; fax: 061 234483; email: hotel.palmquell@iafrica.com.na; web: www.palmquell.com
If you're coming from the airport, the Palmquell is clearly signposted to the left off Sam Nujoma Drive. Follow Jan Jonker Rd past the junction with Nelson Mandela Av, and you'll find it on the right. It's a bit too far to walk into Windhoek, but ideal if you have a car – there is secure parking available.

Austrian-owned, this upmarket pension offers a quiet setting among the palm trees that give it its name. Relax in the sauna, lounge by the pool, or take a cool dip, perhaps followed by a drink at the bar. Double and family rooms are simply furnished, but very well equipped, with AC and underfloor heating, telephone, TV and a wall safe; paintings by Namibian artists provide an individual touch. Although meals are not available in the evening, there are plenty of restaurants locally. And the hotel does boast a good range of South African wines!
