Elisenheim

(9 rooms, 5 campsite pitches) PO Box 3016, Windhoek; tel/fax: 061 254429; email: awerner@mweb.com.na; web: www.natron/net/tour/elisenheim
Just 15km north of the centre of Windhoek, Elisenheim is signposted to the left of the main B1 as it leaves the city. Follow the track for a further 6km, then turn right just before Namibia tannery.

The farm, set in grounds of some 5,000 hectares at the foot of the mountains, offers German hospitality under the care of Andreas and Christina Werner, and a place to relax.

The comfortable rooms all have en-suite showers and toilets, while outside is a tree-shaded swimming pool surrounded by a grassy area. Weaver birds nest in the bamboo that shelters the house. Close by is a small campsite, with its own pool. Campers need to be totally self-sufficient, as nothing is available here except firewood.

Dinner – usually a two-course set menu based on game – is available for N$70 per person, and lunches can also be prepared. Visitors are welcome to explore the area, which is home to kudu, warthog and steenbok, and plenty of baboons 'looking for work'. A sundowner trip into the mountain for a minimum of four people costs N$55, including drinks.
